Bowie Knife Handle Options

2016/7/16 16:33:50

Even though they represent a specific design, there are many different options where Bowie knives are concerned. There are several different blade designs, based on the original Bowie knife blade, but with several modern modifications. There are also numerous types of steel from which one can choose. The hand guard, the decorative elements and specialized blades are all options where these knives are concerned. The handle is one of the most flexible options for a Bowie knife.

Handles that are made out of antler, bone or horn are very popular and suit the historical origins of these knives. When these materials are used for the handle on Bowie knives, however, there are certain disadvantages. These materials have little natural grip to them. When they become wet, they can also become very slippery. These handles may also not be as agile as one would like when performing delicate tasks such as cleaning game. For looks, however, these handles are very striking.

Metals are another popular option for Bowie knife handles. Metals are very strong, light and offer the potential of providing a lifetime of service. They are usually scored with patterns that make them easier to grasp. They also have the advantage of being resistant to corrosion, depending upon the metals employed in their manufacture. Metal handles are found on both inexpensive and very expensive Bowies.

A composite handle is essentially a handle that is made out of multiple materials. On a Bowie knife, a composite handle is oftentimes used to reduce the overall weight of the knife. These materials are typically very durable and can provide years of reliable service. They are also usually designed to be easy to grip, even when the knife becomes wet. They are among the most popular handle materials for high-end Bowie knives.

Composite handles are generally found on the most advanced and high-end Bowie knives. These handles are very strong and, usually, they have a soft and scored surface that provides excellent grip, even when the knife is wet. These are also among the longest-lasting of handle options. Some handles come with leather wrappings, which serve to increase the safety and offer a different look to a Bowie. Leather-wrapped handles are also found on some of the more expensive models of Bowies, just as are composite handles.
