Best Lures To Catch Walleyes

2016/7/16 16:36:31

There is nothing more thrilling than being out on the lake or river fishing for walleyes. The walleye is one of the most sought after species of fish in the nation for several reasons. First of all, you won't find a better tasting fish anywhere. The white tasty meat is delicious and one of the reasons this species is so popular. Another reason is because the walleye is a challenge to catch.

They can put up a struggle that will keep you talking for a long time. The best habitat for the walleye would be a deep lake with a sandy, rocky or a gravel bottom. However, they can also be found in rivers and streams. They will eat just about anything they can fit in their mouth but their favorite food is other small fish followed by worms, insects and crustaceans. Even though the walleye will eat just about anything it can get in its mouth, there are still certain baits that work better than others.

The five best lures used to catch walleyes are listed below:

Soft Plastic
Spinnerbaits
Crankbaits
Spoons
Jigs

Soft plastic lures always seem to get the job done no matter where you're fishing. Usually the bright colors like yellow combined with a dark color will get the attention of this species very well. Twister tails come highly recommended when fishing for walleyes.

There are several lead head jigs available that were designed especially for the walleye that will often work better than live baits. Spoons work well in all seasons so it's a good idea to have a few with you at all times. Crankbaits and spinnerbaits can be used from early spring till late fall with some great results.

If you're using one type of lure and it doesn't seem to be getting the results you hoped for, try a different one. All of these lures work great but some will work better in one type of fishing conditions than they will in another. It all depends on the weather, temperature of the water, time of day and the mood of the walleye. Sometimes they can be stubborn and simply won't take a certain type of lure. That's why it's recommended that you always take a variety of lures ranging in all shapes and sizes with you on your fishing trips. You never know exactly what to expect.

Where to Find the Walleye

The five lures listed above are excellent choices when fishing for walleye.
However, the first step in a successful fishing trip is finding the walleye. In the spring, they will be close to the shoreline and easier to find. Look for them around any structures where they can find shelter and where they can begin the spawning season. They will be very aggressive during this time of year making it one of the best times to go walleye fishing.
