There are always secrets to fishing some lakes and Kawartha Lake is not different. You can learn where to fish, how to fish, what to fish with and when you should fish the lake.

Although these may not be a secret to locals, if you are traveling to the area, you will want to know these answers so that you can catch al the crappie you want. There is nothing better than fishing for crappie in a new area. You can fish like a pro without being a local angler. Once you see how easy it is to fish Kawartha Lake, you will want to visit the area and enjoy some tasty delights for dinner the same night.

Where should you fish on Kawartha Lake? This question is easily answered in months. Timing is everything when you are fishing for crappies. Once the ice melts, fish the shallows where the crappie are looking for food. The water will be to cold for spawning right away, but the crappies are hungry. Most people cal this a fake spawn because the fish migrate to the shallows, but they are just eating and waiting for the temperatures to rise.

Shallow water fishing at this time only lasts for a week or two and then the fish move back to the deep waters to wait for the water to warm. When the water temperature hits about sixty-six degrees, they will move back to shallow waters and remain as long as a month. For spring fishing concentrate around the shorelines and the weed beds that come to life. Find the hot spots where the fish like to spawn and after spawning, catch them on their way back to the deeper waters.

Summer fishing is done in about twenty feet of water. The fish split up and go in every direction while staying in their schools. It is sometimes best to have a fish locator to help you find the schools. You can look by the feeding shelves on the bottom of the water. Deep diving crankbaits will work very well during the summer.

The fall months are similar to the summer, but the crappie are nestled near the baitfish schools. Use what you use for bait during the summer months to catch the crappies during the fall. The crappie is semi-active and you will need to jerk the line and pause. Do this about every thirty seconds to get the fishes attention. Try to fish on overcast and slightly windy days. The crappie will be closer to the top of the water. However, on sunny days, they will move down deeper in the water.

How should you fish Kawartha Lake? Get a map of the lake and map the places that have a nice home for the crappies. This would be underwater structures, depth of the water and where the canals, docks and rocks are located. You want to have a boat for fishing on this lake for the best results. When you use a boat, keep the motor down to a slow movement so you do not spook the crappie away from the area once you have found them. Wear some polarized sunglasses so that you can see movement in the water. The water in some areas is clear enough to see the fish.
