Aquaponics Questions

In this posting I will cover a few common aquaponics questions and techniques. The most obvious of aquaponics questions is what is aquaponics? With aquaponics you are able to grow fish and plants simultaneously in a closed system. The waste that the fish produce feed the plants and make them grow. The plants in turn make the water filtered for the fish to inhabit.

The most common aquaponics questions I'm asked is about the 'green' factor involved with aquaponics. Aquaponics is a totally natural and organic system. In fact if you look at all the components of the system the only real 'additive' is the food you give your fish to eat ( and you need to feed the fish for them to develop the waste needed for the plants ). The plants work as a filtering system and they purify the water - you can't get more organic than that!

Another of the aquaponics questions that is related to the 'organic' factor is pesticides. This is a big no-no. You cannot use any of these chemicals in an aquaponic system - the fish will not last very long of you do add any sort of toxin. So, what plants am I able to harvest when I have an aquaponics system on the go? The most common ( and easy to grow ) are the 'leafy' type plants like lettuce but these days talented aquaponic users are able to grow thinks as big as cucumbers and even melons. You can grow flowers to if you want to.

The aquaponics questions covered so far have not really covered the fish in the system so - what types of fish can I use? My favorite ( and a lot of other aquaponic users favorite choice ) is the breed of fish called Tilapia. These fish are built to last, they are very hard and they can handle a lot of different situations that may arise in the water. There are a variety of other fish you can raise in an aquaponic system like Koi and goldfish for example but I find Tilapia the most user-friendly.

So how many of these fish can I put in the system? As far as aquaponics questions go this is an relatively important one - we don't want people stuffing hundreds of poor fish into one system. This goes hand in hand with the size of the tank. You should also check the instructions that come with the filtration unit to get some sort of idea to how many fish you can raise in the unit.

The aquaponics questions included here are just the main questions I often come across. If you search online you will find other aquaponics questions and answers to help you out. I hope you have a successful aquaponics experience.
