Silver salmon are also known as Coho salmon.?They are very aggressive and acrobatic fish, so you will be in for a big fight when you hook one.?If you are targeting these fish there are a few things you need to know.?Read on for a few tips when silver salmon fishing in Alaska.

Coho make for great freshwater and saltwater fish.?They stay in freshwater for a couple of years after being born before making their way to saltwater.?After a few more years they will return to freshwater streams to spawn and die.

It is best for you to fish for silver salmon during this spawning time.?This is usually later in the season.?You would be best off to schedule your trip anywhere between August and October when silver salmon fishing in Alaska.

As mentioned earlier, these fish are very aggressive and acrobatic.?They will put up a terrible fight once hooked.?Therefore it is very important for you to use a rod which is flexible enough to handle them.?

It is best for you to use light tackle for Coho.?Any rod or reel you use should support at least 15 to 20 pound test lines.?The water can also be very turbulent which can cause problems, which is the reason it is so important to use a flexible rod.

You should also be aware that Alaskan silver salmon typically do not like fast water.?If you are fishing from one of these spots you will likely be waiting a long time to hook a Coho.?Instead, you should look for areas where the water current runs more slowly.?These salmon can usually be found closer to the banks of the rivers and streams.

It is also a good idea for you to know the best weather conditions to catch these fish.?When it comes to the Alaskan Coho you will find them more active when the water temperature lies between 44 degrees and 58 degrees Fahrenheit.

These fish are also very active during rainy weather.?If it is not rainy they also like to be active when the sky is overcast.?This usually is not a problem in Alaska since the weather can turn inclement at a moment's notice.

If you plan for do silver salmon fishing in Alaska, it is important to remember the Alaskan silver salmon is a great saltwater and freshwater fish to target.?They are very aggressive and acrobatic however, so make sure you use a rod which is flexible enough.?The rod should at least support 15-20 pound test lines or else you will risk letting the Coho snap the line and get away.
