Big game fishing requires multiplying reels. The reels can be of two types - star drag and lever drag. In a star drag reel, there is a control knob that can be turned by hand. This helps in increasing or decreasing the drag. Such a reel sometimes looks very old-fashioned but is a very efficient fishing tool and brings real excitement to the sport. There are several manufacturers that produce star drag reels.

In a lever drag reel, there is a smooth-acting lever with the help of which it is operated. This lever is pushed forward when the drag needs to be increased and in order to decrease the drag, it is pulled backwards. These big game reels can generally be seen in big game fishing tournaments. The lever drag reels are produced by numerous companies around the world.

In the fishing game, the lever drag reels are more popular than the star drag reels. The reason lies in the greater sensitivity of the lever drag. The lever drag allows you to increase the drag tension gradually and precisely, while with the star drag you can apply a relatively small amount of drag. Increasing the drag beyond a certain level in a star drag may cause it to break as well. However, the lever drag reels are not cheap and their average cost is always higher than the star drag reels.

These reels come in various styles and sizes. But if it’s really a big game, a rod of 50, 80 or 130-pound class is always recommended. Occasionally, the unlimited class reels can also be seen in fishing for big games.

A big game reel is designed for hard work. Most of these reels come with roller guides made of hard and low-friction materials. The materials used these days are silicon carbide and titanium, which keep them lightweight instead of making them bulky.
