2016/7/18 10:31:59

Unless you have a friend or relative who is an accomplished fly fisherman, taking fly fishing lessons is a great way to learn the sport. Lessons are also helpful for fisherman who have some experience at fly fishing but want to elevate their abilities and learn new, useful techniques from the experts. Some of the schools provide Master Certified Instructors. Schools that offer fly fishing lessons are located throughout the United States and all over the world.

One day courses are available for beginners, who typically spend part of the day learning about flies and the equipment and the rest of the day outside learning the proper techniques of casting. A two day course is preferred since this will typically give you a full day to practice casting outside under the tutelage of an experienced instructor. A lot of schools offer fishing trips to excellent fly fishing locations accompanied by an expert fly fisherman, however these trips are usually expensive.

Topics Usually Covered in a Beginners Class

Subjects covered include the pros and cons of different lengths of rods, different techniques in maneuvering the rod and the basic differences of the varieties of fly fishing rods. You will learn about the different varieties of fly reels and how to use them properly. The instructors will discuss the various benefits of the different types of fly lines such as double taper and weight forward lines.

You will learn how to select flies based on the type of river or lake you will use for fly fishing. You will be instructed on how to tie knots which are very important in fly fishing. Other topics that are usually included in fly fishing lessons are casting techniques, learning the different varieties of fish, reading the water and techniques in hooking and bringing in your fish.

Cost of Fly Fishing Lessons

One prominent school on the west coast of the United States charges $160 for a single day of fly fishing lessons which includes all the equipment, a fly fishing manual and has a maximum of five students. Their two day school costs $375 while the advanced two day fishing school costs $425. This package includes transportation to the fishing area and has a maximum of three students.

If you want to save some money and have the convenience of learning to fly fish while sitting on your couch there are a variety of videos and books about fly fishing lessons. Taking lessons however will increase your abilities when you’re fishing with flies at your favorite fishing location.
