When you are looking for some proven tactics for catching monster catfish, you have to keep in mind that even the best tips do not always work all the time. The catfish is a relatively easy fish to catch, but you have to find the right location where the big cats lurk.

The location is important. The catfish, the giants anyway are going to stay in deeper waters. The catfish is also a night feeder. The fish eats almost anything, but the big cats need bait that is large and not a small minnow or night crawler. If you are serious about catching a huge catfish, you need to stay some steps to ensure that you find them first.

If you know that the lake has a population of catfish and have heard about the big ones being caught, get a map of the water. You can get this at the local bait shop or from the DNR. You need to study the map and find the deep waters, preferably surrounded or located by drop offs. The catfish are bottom feeders. They hunt their prey and strike fast.

If you find the deep water, it is more than likely that you will find the big catfish in this area. Map out a few places for night fishing. Do this before setting out. You do not want to use a flashlight and fumble around in the dark on a boat at night.

The next way to catch a catfish will find you examining your equipment. You will need an eight-foot rod with a bait casting reel. Have at least one hundred and forty-five feet of line. The test line should forty-pound test. This is important if you plan to fish for the monster catfish. The catfish is going to put up a good fight and you need the equipment that can handle the fight and pull of the fish. Use a sixteen inch long braided line for the lead. The line is going to hold the fish head or fish itself.

Once you have these things in order, it is time to do some fishing. To catch the monster catfish, you can troll, drift or still drop. Many guide services use the drifting method for catfish fishing. This does work very well and has landed some nice size cats. By drifting, you are going o cover more area. You do have to stay in the pocket where the catfish are in order for this method to work.

You have to have patients when trying to catch the monster catfish. You will not catch the trophy catfish your first time out or even the second or third time in most cases. It takes time and many days out on the water to land the monster.

You will probably catch some smaller catfish, but you need to continue fishing and never give up. The big cats are there, you just have to have the time to fish for them and when the time comes your way, you are going to catch a good size catfish.
