Lake Eufala Article

I've fished this lake for over 30 years. I have over 25 bass to my credit, many weighing between 7 and 10 pounds. Dozens of clients of Reeds Guide Service can also claim the same. Before I fished the lake, my Father and Uncle was there when the dam was completed in 1963. Many handed down fishing holes, have now been given to me, for selection every time I visit this huge Lake. Lake Eufaula, on the Alabama / Georgia border is world renowned for its largemouth bass population.

This past summer, I visited it many times and enjoyed some great fishing in and among the miles of weeds that line its 70 plus miles of water. Recently, we were there and got a surprise, the lake was suddenly dropped 3 feet. This drawdown, is early in the season for lowering the lake. Its usually dropped 4-5 feet for winter pool, beginning in late September on into October.

Much to the delight of the many anglers that frequent this massive lake, the fishing got even better. If you think about all the weeds these bass inhibited prior to this lake drawdown, it relocated hundreds of bass to the nearest drop-off or wood and rock cover.

Now, just like late Fall, the bass are relating to main river ledges, drop-offs, points, islands and the edge of flats, all that drop into deep water. With many feeder creeks, this move can position bass along the same type of areas. Fishing for some really big bass and bunched up schools of smaller bass, just got easier.

Simply moving out a little farther from the original shoreline, will show anglers loads of bass, that are now very susceptible to a wide variety of lures and presentations.

Small worms target all fish. Big worms, will get the big bass along these drops, most anglers are seeking. Man made rip-rap rocks line many of the lakes banks and most rocks are found along bridges, causeways and the lakes lower dam.

Fishing either of these structures with deep diving crankbaits, oversized worms, jig combos and big tube baits, will eventually show an angler doing battle with one of Lake Eufaula's noted, monster sized bass.

There are still many bass in shallow water that will hit conventional lures such as topwaters, shallow running crankbaits, rattletraps, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits and an array of bottom type lures.

A word of caution for first timers to Lake Eufaula. There is a lot of water less than five feet deep during full pool. When the lake is down a few feet, it can be very hazardous for running a boat. Study a map, watch the channel markers, and pay close attention to your depthfinder when running the lake.
