Late Spring Produces The Best Fishing Opportunities For Halibut, Salmon And Cod In The Queen Charlotte Islands

Haida Gwaii, until recently referred to as the Queen Charlotte Islands, is a group of islands off the north coast of British Columbia. The name means "Islands of the People" according to the Haida people who lay claim to the archipelago as their ancestral home, but to the ardent fisherman it means some of the most spectacular salmon, halibut and cod fishing in the area. B.C. salmon fishing lodges are famous for their knowledgeable staff, hospitality and access to deep-sea boat charters that show anglers what prize-winning catches truly mean.

April and May are the best times of year to cart in astounding amounts of game fish, including King salmon, red snapper, halibut and ling cod. Because of the nutritious waters of the area, it is a favored route of these species, as they make their journey to and from their breeding grounds. Naturally, different fish feed in different areas on a daily basis, so the fisherman who wants to drop his line in the most fruitful waters will avail himself of a professional fishing guide and charter boat. B.C. salmon fishing is a specialty among island families, many of whom are members of the staff at several of the friendliest fishing lodges. Hiring one of their charters includes, not only expert advice and vast experience, but a cooler filled with deliciously prepared meals for lunch.

When you return to your comfortable lodge, you will be met with warmth, fun and a great dinner, as well as the superior bragging rights you'll have earned with your day's catch. And for those members of the family who are not fishermen, there are numerous other attractions to keep them busy. A hike through the lush forest areas could allow glimpses of the ample wildlife, as this is the time of year when bear cubs and fawns make their first appearance. Bald eagles are frequently spotted, along with an endless variety of other avian species. Whale watchers are nearly always rewarded with sightings, as are individuals looking for playful otters and industrious beavers.

Other people in the group might enjoy one or two rounds of golf on one of the many well-planned and beautifully manicured golf courses. For people who lean toward less strenuous pursuits, art galleries and day spas beckon, and anyone with even a moderate interest in local history will head for nearby Ninstints to look at the amazing collection of native totem poles.

Simply speaking, once vacationers have discovered the never-ending attractions of Haida Gwaii and its surrounding waters, springtime is sure to call them back year after year.
