Handmade Fishing Bait Recipes

There are many recipes for making bait for different types of fish, and here are some samples of handmade fishing bait recipes. You may want to try several of them until you find the ones that work best for the type of fish you are trying to catch.

1. Dough Balls Catfish Bait Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Peanut butter, cookie dough, or bread
  • Chicken livers, rotten cheese, or garlic powder

 Directions:

  1. Mix ingredients together.
  2. Roll into balls.
  3. Store in sealed container until needed.

2. Lye Soap Catfish Bait Recipe

 Ingredients:

  • Lye
  • Water
  • Melted animal fat
  • Cheese, garlic salt, or anise extract

 Directions: 

  1. Dissolve lye in water and let sit until it is room temperature
  2. Melt animal fat on stove and let cool a little.
  3. Mix with lye until mixture is thick.
  4. Add cheese, garlic salt, anise extract.
  5. Place in soap mold to set for 3-4 days till hardened.

3. Grits Fishing Bait Recipe

 Ingredients: 

  • 1 lb. dry grits
  • 2 cans whole corn
  • ¾ box instant potatoes
  • 2 cans cream style corn
  • Box of coco pops 

Directions: 

  1. Combine all ingredients except coco pops.
  2. Stir until balls are formed.
  3. Put coco pop onto hook and surround with bait mix. 

4. Blood Fishing Bait Recipe 

Ingredients: 

  • 1 c. flour
  • 1 c. cornmeal
  • 2 tbsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 pint chicken blood
  • 3 tbsp. garlic powder
  • 1 box strawberry Jello
  • Cheese cloth

 Directions:

  1. Combine flour, cornmeal, garlic powder and vanilla.
  2. Add blood slowly until bait is thick can be made into balls.
  3. Place dough in cheesecloth.
  4. Place cheesecloth in boiling water for 10-15 minutes and let cool.
  5. Cut into pieces when hard.
  6. Combine pieces with Jello and form balls (add more blood if necessary).
  7. Store in refrigerator. 

5. Carp and Catfish Stink Bait Recipe 

Ingredients: 

  • 35 putrefied night crawlers
  • 1 lb. liquefied beef liver
  • 1 pint sour cream
  • 3 tbsp. garlic powder
  • 1 pkg. thawed bread dough
  • 2 tbsp. flour
  • Large Ziploc bags 

Directions: 

  1. Combine night crawlers, beef liver, sour cream, garlic power and dough.
  2. Knead like you would for bread using extra flour if necessary
  3. Place mix into Ziploc and squeeze out air. (Mark bag “do not open because it stinks”).
  4. Let ferment for two days then squeeze out air.
  5. Put chunk of dough onto hook. 

6. Carp Fishing Bait Recipe 

Ingredients: 

  • 1 box Wheaties
  • ½ lb. sausage
  • 1 can cat food
  • 1 can corn 

Directions: 

  1. Combine ingredients in bowl.
  2. Store in Ziploc bag.
  3. Place on hook. 

7. Carp and Catfish Sweet Dough Fishing Bait Recipe 

Ingredients: 

  • 1 box bran flakes
  • 6 oz. grated cheddar cheese
  • 5 oz. honey
  • 3-1/2 c. flour
  • 1 pkg. Cherry Kool Aid
  • 2 tbsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp. anise oil
  • 2-1/2 c. water 

Directions: 

  1. Smash bran flakes in large bowl.
  2. Add flour, cheese, Kool Aid, garlic powder, honey, water, and anise oil.
  3. Knead for 10 minutes.
  4. Place mix on wax paper and flatten (use extra flour to keep from sticking).
  5. Place flattened mix into Ziploc bags.
  6. Store in freezer.
  7. Use octopus circle hooks #’s 1 or 2 because bait is heavy. 

8. Rice Handmade Fishing Bait 

Ingredients: 

  • 4 lb. bag instant rice
  • 1 bottle chocolate syrup
  • 1 bottle BBQ sauce
  • ½ bottle ketchup
  • ½ bottle maple syrup
  • 1 pkg. strawberry Jello 

Directions: 

  1. Cook rice from instructions on box.
  2. Combine all ingredients.
  3. Place in Ziploc bag and let set overnight.
  4. Form into balls. 

9. Handmade Oatmeal Fishing Bait 

Ingredients: 

  • 2 c. cornmeal
  • 1-1/2 c. flour
  • 1 c. oatmeal
  • 3 tsp. maple syrup
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • 1 pkg. strawberry Jello
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 c. water
  • 1 bag fruit-flavored miniature marshmallows 

Directions: 

  1. In large pot combine all ingredients except flour on medium heat.
  2. Stir until marshmallows melt.
  3. Remove from heat, sift in flour, and blend.
  4. Store in containers.
