Fun Fishing At The Fort Desoto Piers

There are lots of things that you can do at Fort Desoto Park, which is located in Saint Petersburg Florida, but the primary thing I will be talking about is the fishing that can be done there.

One option of fishing that can be done at the park is by boat, seeing that there are plenty of boat ramps in the park. You can fish the mangroves, under bridges or right off of Eggmont Key, all known to be exceptional for saltwater fishing.

Not everyone has the money to own a boat though, so that is why there are two great fishing piers that are at the park. The fishing piers are called the Gulf Pier and the Bay pier, both of them can offer excellent saltwater fishing all year round.

The first pier that I usually go to is called the Gulf Pier, and it seems to be more populated with fishermen then the Bay pier is. The Gulf Pier is roughly a quarter mile long, and they also have a bait and tackle shop right before the pier that is open during the day.

Some of the fish you can expect to catch while fishing off the Gulf Pier are snapper, grouper, sharks, sting rays and many other types of fish. If you go to the Gulf Pier during the day, you will most likely get a chance to see some dolphins swimming, just be careful and try not to hook up with one.

The other fishing pier that is in the park is called the Bay Fishing Pier, which is slightly smaller than the Gulf Pier. This is where all the tour boats will drop off and load tourist to take them on various types of boat trips that the park offers. None the less it is also an excellent place to catch some fish.

For night time fishing I recommend fishing at the Bay Pier. For one it is not as windy, and you do not need as heavy fishing tackle as it has docks that are close to the water. During the day they have a tackle shop also where you can purchase bait and stuff.

The best thing about the Fort Desoto Fishing Piers is that they are always open. There are several lights that turn on at night so you don't have to worry about trying to fish in the dark. Both piers are very close by each other so moving from one pier to the next will take less than five minutes by car.
