The crappie is one of the most popular species of fish there is because they are easy to catch but they put up a good fight at the same time. This makes them fun and interesting to reel in plus, they taste great too, which adds to their popularity. Most all anglers will agree that every place that you go crappie fishing is different and there are a few secrets to each area that will make your fishing experience even better.

Every lake, river, stream and pond where crappies can be found has its own unique qualities which determines where the fish are located and when they are the most active. Therefore, different strategies are required in order to get the most from your fishing trips. Kawartha Lake, which is located in Ontario, is no different. Fishing for crappies in a new area is exciting and when you're reeling in as many fish as the locals, it can be very rewarding.

If you recently moved to the area or plan on visiting soon, here are a few crappie fishing secrets that will help you have a wonderful and productive fishing trip. You can learn where the best places to go are, which techniques work the best and when it would be the best times to go out on the lake.

Where to Start Fishing

When fishing Kawartha Lake for crappies you need to know a little something about how the seasons affect this species. The time of year will change their behavior and determine where they will be located and which baits they will be the most attracted to. These are two of the biggest secrets that locals know about this lake and why they can be so successful when crappie fishing.

In the spring the crappies begin moving towards the shallow water in search of a place to build their nest so they can begin spawning. This usually begins when the water temperature reaches between 65 to 70 degrees. Usually, they will be the most plentiful in the water that is four feet deep or less. Start searching around all the structures that are in the area and you are sure to run across a school of crappie eventually. They choose to build their nest around structures because it provides them safety and the food source is usually more plentiful in these areas.

If you are in an area of the lake where there is an old wooden dock near the surface of the water, this is an excellent place to go crappie fishing. Other great areas to start searching for the crappie will be anywhere along the lake where branches or small trees have fallen into the water. These are some of the favorite places where the crappies tend to gather together in large groups on Kawartha Lake.
