How To Fish The Weeds

How to Fish the Weeds

Fishing in the weeds can be very frustrating in more ways than one for sure but if you know how to fish the weeds properly they can be a bass freeway at dinner time, just waiting for your offering.

So what do you do…?

You get smart and fish the conditions that are in front of you no use trying to pull crank- baits through water infested with weeds only to come up with lettuce each cast.

First technique that comes to mind is a Texas rigged worm/crawfish a presentation that has been used for many years and is the go to for many professional anglers when the money is on the line. Having many choices of plastics and hooks today to choose from; the fact is they drive bass just crazy so it is no wonder the pro’s drive home the money with Texas rigged plastics.

Plastics come in all kind of sizes shapes and colours, with most today having some sort of a scent impregnated into them either being salt or coffee or some stuff that just smells bad. It is proven that impregnated baits will make fish hold on longer than non scented baits, giving you more time to set the hook.

Texas rigged worms are rigged to be weedless or snag proof and are able to get through even some of the thickest weeds without snagging up. Since they are 98% snag proof they make a great choice when searching out largemouth in the thick of things. You will need to make sure your equipment is up to the heavy conditions that you are going to encounter, heavier rods, line and reels will be needed.

They work and they work very well, you need to try a Texas rigged plastic when fishing in the salad bowl.

We found this place years ago choked with weeds but we knew it held nice size largemouth from a buddy of ours mentioning how he caught some lunkers out of this pond. So of course my buddy’s and I had to try it out and we had the worst time trying to fish this mess, it was just crazy. No more than a turn if you were lucky before you had a head of lettuce at the end of your line. Beyond frustrating for sure, my buddy swore up and down that the pond is full of great fish; you just have to get to them. Make a long story short learning a few weed less techniques made us believers in what lies beneath, he was right, it just took something different.

Since then when I fish in the weeds for largemouth bass I never go without having a rod hooked up with a Texas rigged plastic, I like to stick to natural colours for the most part but I have a few funky colours just for the fun of it.

Just one method for fishing the in amongst the salad bowl of the lake but very effective, try it you will be glad you did, cure the frustration fish Texas rigged plastics, their weedless.
