Catch A Catfish In A Pond

If you are already an experienced pond cat fisher person you will know that you will catch primarily three differant types of catfish. The most common of these three will be the channel catfish. If we talk size while a channel catfish can get pretty big it is still the smallest of the three you will be catching. It may be the smallest but it will be the fish you catch the most of. While you may not catch as many the other two are the blue catfish and the flat head. What you may lose with these for numbers you will easily make up with greater sizes.

There are important things you need to know and understand before fishing in ponds. A big thing with catfish is knowing and understanding how and when they eat. When it comes to the channel catfish you will find that they are quite content to just eat small scraps of garbage, dead animals or even insects that may float on the surface. Because Channel catfish are scavengers the pond life works out real well for them. If you are catching them to transfer them to a pond I think you will be quite surprised at how well they adapt. The Flathead is very similiar. They love to eat and are fairly easy to catch but do grow to be much bigger then a Channel Cat. However once we start talking about Blue catfish we will see many differences. For starters they are quite difficult to find and they are very picky when it comes to what they eat. Thats the main reasons people dont usually set out to catch the Blue cat fish. It just seems like a lot more work then needed considering the other fish around tend to be easier to catch.

When it comes to catching catfish in ponds there are two main techniques that are usually used. If you are in ponds that mainly have Blues and Flatheads then a great way to catch them is with a rod and reel using mainly a bait caster. If you use a single hook you dont stand as much of a chance at catching them. If you are wanting to keep the fish you are catching then a treble hook might be the best choice.

Another thing to consider when going catfishing is the size of the fish you are going after. In many cases you may be able to use a lighter tackle if you know the fish in the pond are smaller. It really is a good idea to use two rod and reel setups for dragging for catfish. It is important that the drags on the reels are not set too high. With lower drags there is a better chance of the fish getting hooked in better. You will see the line go tight and that will give you a chance to pick up the rod and set the hook which will give you a better chance at catching the fish.

The people that are patient when it comes to catfishing will figure out that bait soaking is the way to go. It will also work to put random pieces of bait in the water to help in attracting the catfish to your bait. You can catch catfish all day long but if you really want to focus on the big lunkers then you will want to be fishing just as the sun is going down. So fishing in the evening with really smelly bait to attract will give you a great chance at catching that big fish.

Of course you also have the option of noodling when it comes to trying to catch catfish. This type of fishing will require you to stick your hand in the water and into the mouth of catfish. Yes that means you hand will be the bait and once you see it most thing it is a lot of fun.
