Beginners Pike Fishing Tips

When it comes to getting pike fishing tips for the most part anyone who has fished pike for a long time will say that one of the most important things is knowing where to find the pike. When we are talking Northern Pike we need to know that they have a mind of their own and in a lot of cases are very different then most other fish. Again like I often talk is if you do your home work you stand a good chance at having great success when it comes to catching a fish like the Northern Pike.

First off if we are talking about young pike that are small to medium in size we will usually find them in shallow water hanging out in weeds and below lily pads. When it comes to eating they love to chow down on things like bugs of all sizes, minnows, frogs and even other small pike.

When it comes to the bigger pike we will actually find them out of the weeds. They will hang out at the mouth of rivers and streams. You will also find then in narrows, reefs and in about 10 feet of water on average. Large pike are very aggressive when it comes to feeding. You will find them laying in wait and not moving at all until they are ready to strike. The big northerns like to eat smaller pike, trout, white fish, walleye and even ducks that are swimming on the surface.

When it comes to what sort of rig to use for pike only I would suggest a 7 foot rod with an open face reel that has about 12 pound test in it. It is a very debateble procedure when it comes to using steel leaders. Many experienced fishermen think you will catch more fish by not using them. I say this is a crock. Aggressive pike will bite through your line almost always because they have very sharp teeth. So I say you will catch more fish with using a leader.

The thing about Pike is you will get them to bite on almost anything your little heart desires. Of course just like other fish the pike to do have their favorites. Len Thompson spoons have been a favorite for a long time and will continue to be for many years to come.

Because of the size pike can be caught it is important to know that you have to be able to play your line. Keep the lures moving and keep them active. Once you ge a fish on because of their size and strength you will want to let them play and tire themselves out. Trying to just drag them in on most occasions will just result in lost fish and lost lures.

Catching a fish is great but catching a pike is an experience not soon forgotten. The fact of the matter is to keep on fishing and one day you will catch that pike that you will want to put on the wall.
