Trout Fishing Spinner – Secrets to Choosing the Right Spinner

There are only a few "true and tried" ways to choosing the right kind of trout fishing spinner. No matter what you have learned in the past, the methods talked about in this article come from a long history of trout fishing and practiced by hundreds of trout fishermen around the world. These methods worked for the professionals and will also work for the novice.

The first thing to consider when buying a spinner is the size. If the trout are biting on a small wet fly, why buy a large flashy spinner? It doesn't make sense. The second is color and flash and the third is temperature and light. These are the three main areas to keep in mind when searching for a spinner. It is recommendation to search and buy more than one spinner. Yet, how to go about a search for something unknown in the first place? It is not too hard to go about searching for a spinner if the environment and type of trout are already known to the fisherman.

Before buying a trout fishing spinner, it is important to match the spinner with the criteria above. The first step to shopping for the right spinner is to understand the environment, trout and hatch. Is the environment cold? Is it warm? Is it night? Is it daytime? Is it windy? What are the trout biting on? Is it late or early in the season? All these questions need answering before a fisherman can go out to buy his/her gear.

To do this kind of detailed assessment will result in buying not just one spinner, but many spinners at one time. Some spinners will be small to simulate a dry-fly and others more flashy and bigger to match a minnow. Still others will be heavier to make it down into the deeper waters. There is not one spinner that can work for every fish or environment. Resist the temptation to buy from a TV commercial or magazine that claim one spinner is the sure way to catch a fish. It is hard to resist the sale pitch, but trust me, you will only be disappointed. One spinner is not a "cure-all" for trout fishing problems. Stick to the true and tried methods to reach success.

Let us look at the early trout season. The water is cold to cool. The temperature is cold with some snow run off. It is daytime with early morning sun. Trout during the early season are lazy. They like to swim closer to the bottom and tend to not be too interested in a meal. They will normally only eat what is right in front of their eyes. A trout like this will only go after something that sinks deep and attracts their attention. A flashy, colorful spinner with some weight to it, is what this trout will be looking for as its next meal. Yet two to three weeks into the season this spinner may not work out for the fisherman. He may need a smaller spinner that resembles a dry-fly. Something that will stay above the waterline for those trout that are now more aggressive and coming to the surface for their meals.

This is why it is important to have a good knowledge base before going into a sporting goods shop to buy. Buying a spinner is like a science. The more knowledge the fisherman owns, the less of an advantage trout will have over his line and hook.
