Secrets of Spider Rigging For Crappie

Crappie fishing is a great way to spend your time and enjoy nature. It is loved by anglers of all ages because they are easy to catch and fun reel in. The crappie is also one of the best tasting species of fish around. There is no wonder this sport is so well loved. There are also many different techniques used to catch crappie and one of the most popular is called spider rigging.

Spider rigging is a slow-trolling method that has been used to reel in the crappie for many years. It is a technique that can be used in just about any situation and any type of water condition. The spider rig gives you the ability to cover more areas a whole lot faster than you could if you were just fishing with one rod.

Spider rigging requires you have several fishing poles that are located on each end of your boat. All of these poles sticking out of the boat resemble a spider and this is where it earned its name.

How to Use Spider Rigging

The first thing that you need to do is to get your equipment ready to go. You need several ten foot poles and a set of rod holders for each pole you have. Long crappie poles are used with this technique and you can cover more ground if you have poles set up on both ends of your boat. Therefore, you need to mount your rod holders onto the boat in a position where they are easy to reach but where they are not in your way when walking and sitting.

It is up to you to decide what type of bait you want to use on your spider rigs. Although, you do need to make sure that you choose something that draws the attention of the crappie in your direction. Many experienced anglers will paint the tips of their fishing poles to make it easier to see when the crappies are taking the bait. It can be a little hard keeping up with multiply rods so this really can make a difference.

When you get a bite you need to make sure that you keep the tip of the rod pointing upward when you are taking it out of the holder. Otherwise, you run the risk of letting the crappie get away. You also need to remember not to reel the line all the way in when you catch a fish. You are dealing with a long pole so, the only way you will be able to reach the crappie to remove him from the line is if you leave enough line available to swing the fish over where you can reach him. Reeling him all the way to the tip of the line will make it a lot more difficult.

Summer is the best time to go crappie fishing with spider rigging because the fish will be held up in the deeper areas of the water. This method allows you to get your bait into the deeper water easier where you can get the attention of the crappie. You may find it difficult to use this technique in windy weather because it makes it much harder to control your lines and the speed of the boat. Therefore, it is a good idea to check the weather forecast before heading out on the lakes and rivers.
