Beaver Lake

Beaver Lake in Anderson County is a 158 acre Commonwealth owned lake, located 10 miles west of Lawrenceburg, Ky. off of U.S. 62. The lake was built in 1963 and opened to the public in 1964.

The lake supports a nice population of Trophy largemouth bass. Fish as large as 11 lbs have been caught in Beaver Lake. Catch and release is a religion for the people fishing the lake on an everyday basis. The 11 pounder was returned to the lake. My personal best was an 8.1 pound Largemouth that I originally thought was a Ky. bass since it had a nice tooth patch in the right place. There is a population of Ky Bass in the lake and they do get to a nice size in Beaver Lake.

The lake made a reputation for itself in the early 80's as having one of the best ratio's of fish caught per hours fishing time of any lake in the Commonwealth. While that ratio is not as high currently recent changes may make that a reality again in the near future.

About 2 years ago the KDFWR came in and drew the lake down and used rotenone to destroy the gizzard shad in the lake. This has resulted in a serious growth in the Crappie Population and in the quality of the bluegill and Redear at the lake.

More recently the lakes Marina has changed owners and there is a change in name. The Marina is now Fair Winds at Beaver Lake. The new owners are Barbara and Mark Wiggington. Mark is retired Military. They're assistant and my personal guide on the lake recently is their son Alex. Some day Alex is gonna be a really good fisherman on this lake.

Due to the killing off of the Shad population there is a No Shad for bait policy on the lake. The size limit on Bass has also been raised to 15 inches. If you are caught with shad the fine is any where from $25.00 per baitfish, to $250.00 per baitfish. YES, That is PER FISH in possesion.

Early spring is the best time to tie into one of the lunkers that inhabit the lake. Slow rolling a spinner bait with a large willow leaf spinner and casting large shad type crankbaits works well. See the nice 8 pounder I am holding above?? I caught that on a 1 ounce Spinner bait with a 3 inch willow leaf blade on a WINDY April 13, 1994.

I have caught my largest shellcrackers using popeyes tipped with wax worms in as little as 6 inches of water during the May - June spawning period. My personal best is an 8 incher that weighed in at 3/4 pound. Crappie hit nicely on minnows drifted at about 4 feet deep in creek arms during the same period. The largest this year was just over 2 pounds.

Other species in Beaver are bluegill, black bullhead, longear sunfish, channel cats, and spotted bass.

The state has started spraying to keep the grass and algae mats down in summer.

Camping areas and a Handicap Accessible fishing pier are available at the Marina. Boats with motors rent for $35.00 per day. (6-19-02)

No beer is allowed on the lake..anyone renting a boat will have their coolers checked.

Special Regulations: 10 HP limit on motors.

Boat launching fee $5.00
