Origin of Sharks: Unearthing Ancient Fossil Records

The earliest known sharks appeared during the Ordovician period, around 450 million years ago. It is generally believed that they originated in shallow seas as scavengers of the prehistoric seas. One of the places where early sharks fossils have been found is what is today the Sahara Desert, North Africa.
