The Joy And Challenges Of Bass Fishing In Winter

Bass fishing during late autumn and winter can be really challenging. In the regular bass fishing season, you can easily identify the structure of the fish in the water, there’s blooming vegetation and the areas shaded from the sun will have fish even when the sun is high up. In the winter, however, there are no such advantages.

So, how do you go about bass fishing in winter? The secret is to have a good knowledge of the bass and how it lives during the winter when its source of food can be sharply reduced by harsh weather elements. Small fish can die in extremely cold weather as well as other aquatic life, which will greatly limit the bass’ diet throughout the winter months. This is why bass have a feeding frenzy before winter sets in where they will eat practically anything to keep themselves nourished until spring.

Selecting the bait is crucial in winter bass fishing, perhaps even more than type of fishing tackle you use. This is because a bass will not move a long distance in almost freezing water to get food unless it will be worth it for them, meaning it should be a big meal for them and one that should be easy to catch since they don’t want to expend so much energy. In other words, you must use large bait that moves slowly in water.

Some ideas include throwing those plastic lures, preferably 10 to 12 inches long. There is a wide range of fishing lures available so just take your pick. You can try attaching 4-inch pork flavored trailers onto large jigs to attract fish. Fishing in any season calls for patience but you need more of it when winter bass fishing.

During summer months, you can expect smaller baits to be whisked in and out of the water in less than a minute but during winter, not only do you need larger bait, you also need to leave them in the water for at least 3 minutes. A good suggestion here is to make sure your baits stay warm. Place a few into a plastic bag and put them in your pocket. This way, you will have flexible bait that will work great in cold water. This will help you catch more bass.

Again, the secret to winter bass fishing is not really a secret patience. It’s easier said than done, particularly for big city people who are used to getting what they want in a snap. But if you want to break from your hectic lifestyle and experience some splendid stillness, take your fishing pole and go winter bass fishing. Don’t forget to bring hot drinks, plenty of food and dress in several layers.
