Fishing Country Harbour - River Cottage

2016/7/18 11:25:50

I was so lucky to be involved in a great fishing trip down in the Country Harbour area (June 23 – 28). This is our annual fishing trip with the boys from work (Cr4 Fish Fried), our 11th. It is good to get away from work and enjoy time with friends out on the water fishing. Trying to hook the biggest or most fish for bragging rights never gets old.

We packed up the trucks with our gear and headed to our accommodations, the River Cottage.

This cottage is ideal for our needs; it’s situated right on the Country Harbour River.

You can put your boats in the water to go up the river into the Harbour, or fish right from the banks of the cottage itself. We can’t say enough about this great cottage, everything we needed was available. All you have to do was take your food and favourite beverage and enjoy what this cottage offers. If you ever get the chance to fish the Country Harbour area, this is the place to start (http://www.cottagesincanada.com/rivercottage2).

This trip also gave me the chance to try out a new cooler, the Esky 85, check out my review. Esky 85

We fished the river a couple of times with only one trout to be hooked, but my fishing partner Pat and I hooked into some Mackerel. Yes big Mackerel that have been up since the 10th of June according to the locals. Didn’t know for sure what I had on until it came to the surface, taking a trout spoon like that? The other boats got some and we had them for an appetizer before supper one night, some good.

Somehow we always have to do the road trip somewhere, ending up nowhere, you know what I mean? That one guy who knows a lake...somewhere, you know the guy. He wanted to head to Steward Lake even found the Steward Lake road, which end up a dead end after traveling up hill forever. Found out later you needed bikes to get into it. (He also later on went to try Seal Harbour Lake, don’t even try it, 6 feet deep and no fish).

Plan B, I found a lake on Google Earth when I was planning to go fishing in the area not to far from where we were, Gold Brook Lake. It was right of the road and you could back your boat right in.

This was a fairly big lake but was only 10 feet at its deepest. The George and Jimmy duel hit some nice trout here. We hit this lake once more during a rain storm that week (because we had too) not getting a bite. One funny thing that happen there was Pat got snagged and by the time he turned around he spooled off. I has taking in my line and told him with luck I might hook it, sure enough my hook had it with just a foot or so to go, too funny.

While in Country Harbour area you have to try Ocean Lake, A big lake that we usually have good luck in. Now they don’t call it Ocean Lake for nothing, if the wind gets up you better head for shore because she makes big waves.

We all hit some nice trout with Patty and I the most, our secret was a Perch fly I tied.

All we did was troll the fly with our spinning rods, it feels so good when their hitting something you made.

Have to say it was a great trip with just one rained out day out of the five. So if you’re down this way give the Country Harbour area a try and don’t forget to stay at the River Cottage… FISH-ON! Cookster
