Task 23: Home Made Lures

I've been doing a lot of fly fishing lately. Fly fishing in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to be exact. So I've had a few chances to test out and play with some flies that I have tied.

I in no way am a professional fly tier, but what I have noticed is that it really doesn't matter what the fly looks like, as long as 2 things happen. 1. You get the fly to the right water level, and 2. you present it in somewhat of a realistic manner.

Everyone says for trout, the fly must be on a dead drift, and make sure you mend your line up or down stream as necessary, otherwise the fish wont bite. I have caught just as many trout on either the retrieve or a swing drift, as I have a normal drift. Just depends on what they want I guess. Anyways back to the flies.

My last two trips have been completely opposite. One; the fish were on bottom, the last; everything was closer to the top. I have found out, either way, trout really like Mosquito's and Blue Winged Olives (BWO's).

I usually fish with 2 flies on, and almost always I have one of these two on. Usually as my trailer depending on the depth I'm fishing at. The mosquito's surprisingly are just as productive underwater as they are on top. Either way, they are real easy to tie, and a must for any fisherman!
