Bass Fishing on the Fly

2016/7/18 11:56:59

Fly-fishing is a technique that is gaining much popularity among anglers of all ages. Being a bass angler I never gave any though to fly fishing, assuming it was a sport for trout fishermen. But I was wrong. Once I actually say the flies used for bass and how effective they were, I have decided that this year I will give a fly rod a try.

The fly rod having a flexible tip that normally ranges from seven to nine feet in length makes it a great bass rod. The coated plastic line weighs enough to allow the cast the land in a targeted area with the light fly. Even though the flies range in a variety of sizes, colors and weights, it is impossible to cast these amazing lures with spinning tackle or a baitcasting outfit.  And another great thing is poppers and other top water bass lures can be used as well.

My thinking that this type of fishing was only used to catch trout was not very well thought out. After taking the time to investigate fly-fishing for a blog I wrote last year, I now realize that this technique seems to be perfect for catching bass.

Bass flies are very cool, fly tiers know that bass will eat everything from insects to baby ducks, making the flies range in sizes and styles, from birds to mice or mesquites to frogs. What an exciting sport. I can not wait to get equipped and learn how to use these amazing flies and the fly rod.

In this video by Todd Moen, that he has graciously granted permission to include in this blog, you can see just how effective this technique of bass fishing can be in the hands of a true craftsman. Todd has done a wonderful job putting this video together. I love how the angler actually goes in after the bass through the weeds! Who needs a $40,000.00 bass boat?
