When Is Spring Like Winter?

2016/7/18 12:13:54

So when is spring like winter? After we had one of the coldest winters in a long time. And it tries to hang on even though it is spring. We had a lot of rain a few days ago and the temperatures have been chilly at night and in the mornings. This weather has definitely affected the fish's behavior this year. I went kayak bass fishing with my friend Eddie yesterday at my home lake, Marlu Lake in Lincroft, NJ. We fished for about 6 or 7 hours and I managed to get one small bass. Eddie had a few hits but failed to stick any. I caught the bass in some underwater water trees that had fallen in some time back. It was a very subtle hit which made me think it was more of an investigating bite then a hungry or attack bite. For me springtime bass fishing means soft plastic worms. Although 90% of my bass fishing year round is dedicated to soft plastic, worms in the spring and summer work best for me. We cruised the shoreline in water 2' to 10' and although the fish finder was showing fish, there didn't seem to be as many as in the past. The water was around 68 degrees. We headed off to deeper water and low and behold the fish finder was going crazy showing fish in 15' to 25' of water. It was like a mid-winter pattern. Now that we found the fish we were certain we would catch a few. We threw crankbaits, soft plastics, spinnerbaits, jigs and just about every thing but nothing worked. There were a few boats out but nobody else hooked up either. Aside from the fact that the air temp hit about 70 degrees, everything else felt like winter fishing. I guess the bass, just like me, are sick of this cold weather. For now I will do some saltwater fishing and wait for the lakes to heat up a bit.
