Fishing Family Day on Pickerel Lake, Ont.

2016/7/18 12:20:44

This past summer 2012 on Pickerel Lake, close to Kenora area in Ontario, quality family fishing time was had! The weather was warm and sunny, 80+ F and water temperature approximately 70f. Being on the boat, water and together with family, what could be better?

Location, dimensions and depth of lake:

Pickerel Lake is about 3 miles long with three outlets and about 1 mile in length each. The lake is gin clear with a sandy bottom and parts of the lake have a cobblestone on the bottom. There are three creeks that drain into the lake and one larger outflowing creek. There is a spot on the lake that is 100 feet deep. There are a few underwater humps and quite a few weed pockets. The shoreline is rocks, sandy beaches with huge green pines trees, blue skies, white billowing clouds which presents that pristine picture perfect lake look!

Fish species and Resort:

The lake is home to walleye, pike, jumbo perch and smallmouth bass, making it a great fishing location. Resort and Inhabitants: There are several private cabins and 1 resort that offer a host of activities and amenities. The Resort is called Pickerel Lake Outfitters.  Phone: 807-543-3113 for resort details.

Family Time:

Dan Meyer from Meyer?s Auto body in Winnipeg, his 2 boys aged 9 & 6 and their dog went on a quality time family fishing trip. Great way to enjoy nature, fishing and quality family time! Barak is the oldest and Nolan the youngest. The family dog?s name is Stella. Barak caught the first two fish of the day in about 12 feet of water just next to a ridge that dropped to 30 feet. Do you remember catching your first fish? Exciting always! The first was a walleye and second was a northern pike. Barak and Nolan use a kid?s 2'6" all in one rod and reel with 10lb line. For bait the boys use a jig with a 2" grub twisty tail. They both are handy with minnows but still squeamish with leaches! Totally understand!  Dan (Dad) used a Shimano reel and & 10lb FireWire and for bait live minnows. The live minnows give great entertainment to the youngest son. The boat is a 16' Lund Pike SS with a Mercury 50hp perfect for the size of lake.

What are you doing for quality family time?
