Southeast Florida - Week 1 Report - May 2012

The wind picked up during the week and the storms moved in. Running to the north to get around the storms produced some good results. As the wind shifted to the east the bite picked up. Offshore the dorado bite was in 100-320 feet with good numbers of smaller fish. Kingfish were in 90-130. With the full moon and east wind the bite should turn on. The sailfish was good in about 120 feet. Wahoo and cobia were scattered throughout the area. Skirted and bare ballyhoo, strip baits and goggle eyes all produced well.

On the reefs and wrecks, in 40-200 feet, yellowtail snapper, mutton snapper, mangrove snapper, kingfish, and cobia were in the mix.

Nearshore, along the beaches, piers, inlets and Intracoastal Waterway bluefish, spanish mackerel, blue runners, snappers and pompano were along the beaches and around the piers. In the Intracoastal snook were taking baits around docks and bridges. Bait was plentiful in the area.

In freshwater, the bass bite picked up in the lakes after the front passed. Live shiners produced well with larger number just outside the grasses after the spawn.
