Vancouver Area Fishing Report

If you're from the Vancouver or Fraser Valley area it's pretty much safe to say the busy fishing season has arrived. I took five days off work and fished a few early mornings before work to get out there and take in a little of what the local salmon fishing scene has to offer and was not disappointed.

The West Vancouver shoreline is on fire right now. In a seven day cycle we landed 20 keeper fish for friends and family. The rods were hopping and my quests enjoyed the action ! Almost every day we managed our limit. Once you find the school and your tactics are right - you have a pretty good chance to catch them.

Here are some tips :

I have been finding the new Gibbs Delta tackle flashers have been producing very well when matched up with a UV double skirt Yamashita hoochie. I have been using the chartreuse blade in MoonJelly and Glow finishes both with redstripe pretty much all week. The magic depth for me has been 31 feet on my Scotty Down riggers.

More recently I've been doing better with just the straight glow version, fishing this flasher both sides exclusively.

The Coho schools have been scattered and the trick is to find the schools when the bite is on. We have been finding them from the Cap Mouth to Point Atkinson ... although lately the flood tide seems to push the fish closer to the Cap mouth. This was the case for most of the past week however, last evening the fish were closer to Point Atkinson.

Coho haven't been the only salmon species being landed I've seen some nice Chinook caught off the Cap mouth too ... and have heard stories of the odd pink in the area as well.

Here are a couple of pictures of a young couple out on Sunday, these guys landed a coho and a nice Chinook both fish were caught with a on a Goldstar Coho Killer Green and Glow spoon ! This also goes to show you this fishery is totally accessible to small boats as well, just be sure to check the local wind report through environment Canada.

While I haven't been out recently I'm hearing good things from the Fraser River Sturgeon Fishery ... watching guide posts I see the water is really shaping up and fish are getting landed from top of the River in the Mission area to lower river. I think the trick is to just get out there. The boys from Vancouver Sport Fishing Center have this to report :

Luke has been on the Fraser River a lot this week and has had some very good days with some nice fish up to 6 feet. The Fraser River is back in great condition now that the freshet is almost done for the year. Most of the trips this week landed 6 to 10 sturgeon. If you are looking to do a Vancouver Sturgeon Fishing trip our jet boat is only 15 minutes from downtown Vancouver. If you are staying in a downtown Vancouver hotel, simply hop on the Canada Line and you can be at our boat in 20 minutes! Check them out at Vancouver Sport Fishing Centre

Here's a picture of a fish my good friend Mike Duncan's Prestige Sport Fishing Team landed nice work boys !

We were out a few weeks back and managed a gorgeous fish ... here's a highlight clip.

Friends are reporting Red Springs being landed in the Vedder and lots of Sockeye making their way into the Vedder system. Just remember Sockeye are catch and release only , play fish quickly, keep them in the water, and release them as swiftly as possible and with out harm.

Bottom line ... get out there people ! The weather is awesome and the bite is on !

Special thanks to my good friend Rob Alcock of Gibbs Delta Tackle for allowing me to pop buy the plant and experiment with tackle ideas and thanks for keeping me stocked up with my special flashers so my guests and I can continue to enjoy fishing in the area !

If you get a chance to go Fishing ... Go Fishing !
