Safety & Accuracy: Using Rifled Slugs in Non-Rifled Barrels

It is generally not recommended or considered safe to shoot rifled slugs out of a non-rifled barrel. Using the correct ammunition for your firearm is important to ensure safety and accuracy. Rifled slugs require the spin imparted by the rifling in the barrel to maintain stability and accuracy in flight. A non-rifled barrel may not adequately stabilize the slug, creating an unsafe situation due to potential deviation, reduced effectiveness, and increased pressure inside the barrel.

There are dedicated ammunition options called smoothbore slugs specifically designed for use in shotguns with smooth bores. These smoothbore slugs have unique designs to stabilize their flight without requiring barrel rifling.
