Understanding Barrel Rifling: Methods and Accuracy

Rifling is the process of creating helical grooves inside the barrel of a firearm. These grooves impart a spin to the bullet as it travels down the barrel, which increases its accuracy and stability.

There are two main methods of rifling:

Land and groove rifling: This is the most common type of rifling, and it consists of a series of lands (raised surfaces) and grooves (depressions) cut into the barrel.

Polygonal rifling: This type of rifling uses a polygonal-shaped cross-section instead of lands and grooves. This design is said to improve accuracy and reduce fouling.

Spiral rifling: This type of rifling uses a helical groove that spirals down the barrel. This design is said to improve accuracy and reduce fouling.
