How to Be Safe In A Kayak and Canoe

Anyone can be safe by following proper safety tips and precautions. One should also know about the types of Kayak and Canoe gears. Kayaking helmets, personal flotation devices, and paddles are the most essential gears. However, the sails should also be considered as an essential part of the gear. This entire can save your life, so don't forget anything. Personal flotation device is mandatory for all the kayakers; Life jacket is an essential gear. We are talking about the safety, so not even a single thing should be ignored.

Simple Rules To Be Safe

  • Don't boat alone (Boating with a group of three people is always recommended)

  • Wear life jacket (PFD), Coast Guard approved

  • Learn to swim and be comfortable

  • Learn the important kayaking & canoeing strokes and become a skilful boater, as it will help you in becoming a safer boater.

  • Plan your camping in advance

  • Be prepared and equipped with the necessities

  • Always keep a first aid box with you

  • Learn self rescue

  • Check your physical condition

  • Follow the laws

  • Wear bright clothes to be visible in case of an emergency

  • Carry flares, whistle, and a bright light with you

  • Boating safety class is also recommended

  • Wear a helmet

Another important type of kayak & canoe equipment is a headgear, which defends the person's head from both minimal and life-threatening injuries. These types of headgears are generally made up of three primary parts: Strap & fitting, hard external shell, and quality material intended to absorb shock. The most important thing to consider is fitting of the helmet, as the improper fitting can also lead to the injuries. So make sure it fits securely.

Paddles

Always carry an extra pair of paddles for emergency purposes. Lighter paddles are recommended due to the manipulation of energy. There are two types of paddles available; single blade and double bladed. So choose wisely!

Dry bags

Most of the people try to carry extra clothing, but it is not easy because you can't carry everything. Therefore, dry bags are recommended to keep the clothes as well as the other objects dried. You can choose a dry bag for carrying safety equipment. That's why it is an important accessory to be safe in a Kayak and Canoe.
