Equipment you Must Have before You start Riding Your Bike

So you've decided to take up cycling, maybe cycle to work and cut costs on transport as well as helping the environment by taking the more eco-friendly approach. But what do we need to make sure we are safe and visible on the roads. Let's look at the top 5 pieces of equipment that you must have to increase your safety whilst cycling.

  1. Always wear a helmet. This is one of the most essential pieces of equipment that you must always have available. Never get on your bike without this. A cycling helmet will protect your head should you fall or be thrown from your bike and really could save your life! When purchasing a helmet you must make sure it is of British Standard (BS EN 1078:1997), fits snugly to have any effect at all and is securely fastened with straps with only space for two fingers to fit between your chin and the strap. Never buy a second hand helmet and make sure you replace your helmet at least every 5 years.
  2. If you are cycling at night you must have reflectors on your bike so traffic will be able to spot you in the dark. It is now compulsory that you purchase the following reflectors; a white front light, a red rear light, a red rear reflector and an amber/yellow pedal reflector front and back for both pedals. These are available to purchase as flashing or steady lights – a steady light is the better option if you will be cycling in poorly lit areas.
  3.  Reflective jacket – in addition to your bike reflectors a luminous jacket is also often worn by cyclers again to ensure traffic spot them during dimly lit areas. Again this will protect you if you cycle in the dark.
  4. Make sure your brakes and chains are in top condition. The chain should not be rusty or hanging off and should be lubricated if necessary to enable it to move smoothly.  Most sports shops will supply appropriate oils for this. Check to make sure the tyres do not slide when the breaks are applied. If in doubt visit your local bike shop and ask them to give it a quick check to make sure everything is in working order before you begin cycling.
  5. And finally a lock. This is a must if you intend on leaving your bike on the street whilst shopping or outdoors whilst you're in work. This really is a must! When shopping for a lock you really do get what you pay for; cheaper locks tend to be easier to break whereas the more expensive locks will deter thieves with anything short of a power tool. There are plenty of places that supply bike locks but again to ensure you are purchasing the best, visit your local bike shop for advice on what's best to buy.

Whilst there are individuals who do engage in adventurous charitable challenges such as riding from one end of the country to the other on a Butchers Bike such as former SAS specialist Nigel Thomas from South Wales, we recommend you always use all the necessary safety equipment that is required when engaging in cycling activities and always seek out professional advice before participating in any sporting activity.
