Whirlpools vs. Underwater Tornadoes: What's the Difference?

A whirlpool is a rotating body of water that forms on the surface of a body of water due to the opposing currents from different bodies of water. Whirlpools are smaller and appear near the surface, while underwater tornadoes can be much larger and extend from the surface of the water to the bottom of the body of water. Underwater tornadoes are a type of tornado that occurs underwater and can be just as powerful and destructive as those that occur on land.
