scoring a run

Question
My friend and I are having a debate about a certain senario in baseball. There is one out with runners on first and third. The next batter hits into a double play at second and then first. My friend says that as long as the runner at third crosses home before the third out is made at first, then the run counts. I say the run does not count. Who is right?

Answer
Chris,

The run does not count.  Baseball rules clearly state that a run may not count on the third out if the hitter is retired before reaching first base; it doesn't matter if the runner on third touches home before the out is made.

Now, if the hitter rounds first, then tries to get back and is put out, the run would count if the runner on third scored before the third out was made.

Hope this helps!

Brian
