Baseball Rules: Runner Hit by Ball - Out or Advance?
Question
I have a question and need your advice on a call. Bases are loaded with no outs, ground ball hits R2, the ball is called dead by the umpire, R2 is out. Does R1 go to second and the batter to first? Also does R3 score?
Answer
Neil,
In a situation where a runner is hit by a batted ball, the ball is immediately dead. The runner that was hit is out, the batter is awarded first base, and all other runners return to their base, unless they're forced by the batter being awarded 1B. In your situation, R2 is out, batter is awarded 1B, and R1 is awarded 2B due to being forced ahead by the batter; R3 remains at third base.
