Injury & Roster Rules: Impact on Player Rights?
Question
I had an eleven year old get injured in the first game of the season. His prognosis is to be out for 4-6 weeks. The parents want him to be able to come back to the team after healing, but our local rule states that the player can only miss up to 5 games before being removed from a roster. If the player is removed for injury, does the losing team also lose rights to that player for the following spring season?
Thank you in advance. --- Mark
Answer
Mark,
If a player is removed from the roster they are considered released from the team, therefore, he would not be retained by the team for the following season.
I would recommend that you bring this matter to the league Player Agent to see if there is a way the Board of Directors might waive this local rule and allow the player to remain on the team.
I hope this has helped.
