Throwing power

Question
Hi, my son is 10 yrs old and his throw needs more power. He can just barely throw to 1st base from short stop and needs to arc the ball high to accomplish this. I want him to be able to throw in a direct line, with high velocity, but he just can't seem to get it. Its frustrating because a player will never be able to progress to a higher level with such a weak arm and this concerns me very much! How can he generate the throwing power and velocity that he so desperately needs?

Answer
hi zack
thanks for the question.

the only way to generate more throwing power is to throw more often.
your son needs to play catch, play catch and play catch.
every other day you need to play long range catch where you start out at a normal distance and back up 10 feet after 3 or 4 throws. long range catch is great for improving throwing.

create some fun throwing games where you throw field goals over the backstop, get him a pitch back so he can throw when you are not at home.

make sure he has proper throwing technique--he blocks his right foot, as he throws to a target.

swimming is also great for kids before they are old enough to work with weights.

take a look at my web site  www.bftgu.com and you might find some other ideas.

good luck and enjoy your time with your son. it goes way too fast.
