Base Running Rules: Can a Runner Be Tagged Out at First?

On a walk if the base runner run through first base can he be tagged out by the defense

Answer
Yes he can be & an alert first basemen will know this. The rule book, in all levels, says the batter runner must proceed "directly to first base." Anything else, he is free game.
