Baseball Foul Ball Rule: Does Height Matter for an Out?
Question
Babe Ruth baseball: ages 12-15 yrs.
Batter hits a pitch that goes back towards the catcher and has a noticible arc that does not go directly to the catcher's glove or hand.
Is there a height it must go for it to be a catch for an out?
I am aware of the foul tip rule, but 40 years ago, it had to go over the batter's shoulder for it to be caught for an out.
I am a new grandpop coach and can't find a definitive answer in the rule book.
Please advise. Thank you very much.
Answer
hi kevin
a foul tip is defined as a ball that goes from the bat directly to the catcher's glove or meat hand. if a ball leaves the bat and does not go directly to the glove or meat hand-it is a foul ball and can be caught for the out. it does not have to go above the head or shoulder.
hope this helps.
