sliding

Question
My grandsons's team member slid into first base, head first. It was more like a dive, "sorta". This was a freshmen tournament and the umpire called him out, when he was clearly safe as the first baseman did not catch the ball. The umpire said you could slide into first base but, not head first.  I can not find this rule in Dissy Dean or Major League rules, but, I'm sure there is one. Could you possibly help me.  I try so hard to keep up with his game.
Thank you, donna in Alabama

Answer
There's no such rule in the Major Leagues, but sometimes youth leagues adopt certain rules to increase the safety of the players. It sounds like this may be the case in your situation -- you (or more appropriately, the coach) can probably contact the league director to verify.
