DIY Cooling Remedy for Athletes: Ammonia & Mint Cooler Recipe?

Question
I had a coach that during the summer he would provide our team with a cooler clearly marked not to drink the liquid but it had a concoction of water, ice, amonia and mint extract all mixed together. We would put this on a towel and rub down our necks and arms and it would really give you a second wind even in significant heat. Have you ever heard of this? Do you know what proportions this should be mixed in a 5 gallon cooler?

Thanks,
Brian

Answer
Brian,
I have heard of this and have tried it.  The water, ice, and mint provide a cooling feeling, while the mint extract and ammonia will open up the sinuses when the towel is over your head.  I am skeptical of this because of the ammonia.  Too much can cause burns and I not sure about putting it on your skin.
To answer your question, I am not really sure of the proportions that would be needed.  A cold wet towel, cold water, and staying hydrated will do the job.

Thank You,
John Priest
