earned runs after third error

Question
QUESTION: Runner on 1st and 3rd with two outs...runner on 1st leaves early...pitcher steps off...feints to first...throws to 3rd baseman with runner too far out..3rd baseman dropped the ball allowing the runner to break for home...3rd baseman picked up ball and threw to catcher who also dropped the ball and would have tagged runner out if caught....Would you score errors because of reasonable effort their should have been a third out...and also are any runs after this misplay recorded as earned or unearned?

ANSWER: Based on that description, an error should probably be charged to the catcher and since that would have been the 3rd out, all runs scored after that point would be unearned.

The only possible exception may be if the scorekeeper decides to consider it a stolen base instead of an error.

QUESTION: Another question that came up as we discussed similar scenarios...two outs...runner on first leading off too far...pitcher picks off runner at first clearly in time...first baseman however drops a cleary catchable ball...allowing the runner to get back to first.  Should this be scored as an error on 1B if he should have made the play with reasonable effort? ...and again...should all runs scored thereafter be consisidered unearned runs after the should be third out?

ANSWER: No, that wouldn't be considered an error since the baserunner didn't advance. However, if the ball would have gotten by the 1st baseman and the runner advanced to 2nd, then an error would be charged.

QUESTION: My question is regarding charging earned runs to a pitcher...So does a runner have to advance in order for an error to be ruled...I thought a dropped foul ball for a third out would negate any further earned runs...it is not recorded as an error because runner did not advance to first...however when earned runs are concerned...no runs could be earned thereafter...right?  Likewise in the previous question...runner remains at first...but a reasonable effort on the defense would have made the third out...would there be any earned runs after a misplay that should have resulted in a 3rd out?

Answer
Actually, my understanding is that even on a dropped foul ball, any runs after that would be earned, since an error can't be charged without some baserunner advancing on the play. Likewise in your scenario -- since no error was charged, any subsequent runs scored would be considered earned. This is one of those technicalities that seem unfair, but is part of the rules.
