Well my name is Ehren Mohammadi.  I am 16.  I live in San Antonio,TX.  I have been playing basketball for 11 years now.  I have been watching basketball since I was born.  I am a true Spurs fan but I hardly ever go to the games.  I always wanted to be involved in the basketball orgainzation one way or another.  I want to be a NBA Scout one day.  I am pretty good at scouting out players but I am only limited to some stuff.  Like I can't just fly out to a college and watch a game.  lol.  I just watch it from my house.  I want to know what kinda of studing I need to do in College to get me ready and what else I need to do.  I am not all that great at playing basketball myself.  Right now I am mainly play kinda like street ball. I want to go back to play for my school team but I have to much to worry about because I am a swimmer too and I play water polo.  I don't know what to do.  I will be a Sophmore next year so I kinda have 3 years left to decide but I need to know now.  My cousin said that I might need to be a coach for a while and also to have played in at least high school basketball.  If that is true I will work on my game and try to make the team when I am a Junior but not now I need to start slam dunking but then again I am only 5ft 11in tall.  I can almost dunk maybe some more weight lifting and then I will be able to.  Well I hope you email me back at my email address I hope you can help me out with my situation because I want to someday be the guy that scouted out the next Michael Jordan. My email address again is [email protected].  peace out and I hope to hear from you soon.

Hello Ehren Mohammadi,

It sounds like you have a lot on your mind concerning your future. This is a good thing and don't stress to hard on it. We all go through it and you will figure it out. You have an advantage on most of your peers as you are already planning out your path.

NBA Scout? I believe most scouts in all sports for the most part played the game. If you are not good enough to make your team maybe you can be a team manager. You need to learn the game. All the in and outs of it. From the bottom up! And believe me the team manager is the bottom as the players really give it to the team manager. Being at practice everyday and participating in all the games would be a good start. If you can do it as a player that is even better. I guess what I am trying to get across to you is that you need to be involved with the game in some way other then just watching it on TV. Working towards being a coach would be a great way of doing this. You can find basketball camps and ask if you can work them or volunteer your time. This is a great way of learning the game and making great contacts. Camps usually have guest speakers and a lot of coaches working there.

If being a scout is what you really want to do and you know your not going to be a NBA player then you probably need to go the coaching route. You need to go to college and get your degree in education with an emphasis in physical education. I would go visit my counselor at high school and let him or her know your goals. They can help point you in the right direction.

You can also write the Spurs organization and let them know your goals and ask if you can intern with them. Working any camps or charity events or even in the office. If they don抰 respond you might have to build up a resume and start with the high school camps. I know community colleges are always looking for volunteers so maybe you can start there.

Bottom line, you need to:

1. Be involved with the game.
2. Get a college education.
3. Make contacts.
4. Don't get discouraged.
5. Believe in yourself!

I will look into more and if I have any new info I will send it to you. Good luck and let me know how it is going.

Answer
If you go to college you will have a better chance then if you dont. This will also give you an opportunity to be around the game. You could approach the college coach and let him know your goals. Maybe you can be an assistant coach or a student/coach.

Basically what I am saying is you have to make contacts and do a lot of networking. If you are working camps you should meet a lot of different coaches and players. This will look go on a resume.

I would say start at whatever level is available to you for coaching. Work your way up from there. I coached for 10 years at the college level. These last two years I have been coaching my nephews 12 and 13 year old travel team. Even though that is a big step down from college I can still include it on my resume.

When I wrote it will help you learn the game I didn't just mean the rules but what coaches do to prep for practices and games and how they evaluate players strengths and weaknesses. If you can hook up at a college you will learn how to recruit and evaluate players which you will need that experience to become a NBA scout.

Good luck!
