Pin and Center of Gravity Location

Question
Dear Mr. Oatis,

I have been bowling for quite some time now (well only a few years) and I have used a single ball that was drilled to specify a small hook as I was learning to hook the ball at the time. I am very interested in purchasing a new ball however I have a question. Hypothetically, if the same ball were purchased, one being from an online supplier (brand new), and the other being from an instore-pro-shop catalogue (brand new) would the pin and center of gravity still be in relatively the same place therefore allowing a maximum hook/backend pattern to be drilled on both balls, or would one of the two purchasing methods be less reliable or unaccommodating?

Thank you very much for your time and consideration!

Sincerely,
Nate

Hi Nate, It has been my experience that whether you buy on line or locally you will often receive a great product. This is as long as you specifically request a particular pin placement. For example a 1" to 2" pin placement verses a 3" to 4" pin placement. Each ball has a specific performance characteristics. If you decide you want a different reaction from two identical balls, a surface change would make the biggest notable change in ball reaction. All other variables being the same. Longer pin out position will allow you to vary the lay out of a bowling ball more.
Most in-store catalogue pro shop orders can be placed and filled within a few days. Often if your purchase should meet with any disaster along the way or need follow support for any mishaps, you can just take your bowling ball back to the local pro shop and they will work with you on anything needed to get you back out on the lanes.
An on-line supplier can certainly work with your bowling ball needs, however if you want a specific pin out, don't be totally upset if you receive a 3" pin out, when previously you requested a 3.5 to 4" pin out. The 3" may be the closest thing they have in stock, not all merchants will check with you prior to sending you the product.
If it is not what you hoped it would be, then you may have to go through the process of repackaging the bowling ball and sending it back to company. This also applies to any damage that may occur during shipping,or what if the ball should crack during the warranty period.(If you purchase a warranty with the ball). Again you will have package the ball up and send it back to the on-line company for review/refund/replacement. Take care Nate. I hope in either case you continue to explore the various aspects that give you the maximum performance from your bowling balls, and hopefully you will be able to build and arsenal you can have some serious fun with. God's Blessings to you! -Coach
