Leverage bowling balls

Question
Hi Mr. Otis, I read an old response by Expert Russ King in regards to revs which he stated(Pin placements that create a big imbalance like leverage, reduces rev rate). I was told the same in regards to bowling on pba conditions. (no Imbalance/big leverage equipment!) I am 51 and want to bowl in a few PBA Senior Regionals. However, I am lost in what layouts to try. I consider myself a tweener. I like to have my bowling ball make a hard left turn at the breakpoint and burst into the pocket.(like Tommy Jones)! I have a medium ball track/high revs/med speed. Any suggestions you make would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Rhyce

Hi Rhyce, the best layouts you can try are those that do not snap or jerk to the pocket concerning PBA conditions. You want to use a layout that is readable and more controlled based on your Positive Axis Point(PAP).
One of the first things you have to consider is what equipment you are throwing now and what type of reaction it has. Is it hooking early, just right, or too late down lane. From this you will be able to establish your benchmark ball.
If you get your ball driller involved it should be fairly easy for him/her to get your Positive Axis Point(PAP) from your ball. This is provided you are a very consistent bowler. Once your driller has established that you need changes to your benchmark ball, or that you do not need changes, he or she should be the one recommending suitable equipment and layouts for you to use in the future.
Considering all that you have shared, I understand your desire, however, it would be wrong of me if I suggest there is a bowling ball or layout you can use that will give you the reaction that Tommy Jones' ball can deliver, especially if you may be on PBA Senior Regional Patterns.
Speaking of leverages, revs, flaring and spin times of bowling balls are a technical aspect that takes a good little while to understand. It can be very misleading especially if you have not attended a bowling instructional school or seminar.
In summary Rhyce, the way to success is definitely using your abilities and understanding your current equipment. You should be to first look at the equipment you have and identify it as suitable or not suitable for you. Many bowlers have bowling balls they should not be using, but they do.
Your local pro shop is the first place to start. After their evaluation of your style and equipment they should be able to either fine tune your current equipment, or recommend  bowling ball equipment more suitable for future additions to your arsenal as well as layouts.
Crossing the languages of drillings, bowling conditions and personal style may lead to miscommunication. For example Pin placement, 1 1/8 will give small track flare on your ball, so will placing the pin in the 6th zone, 5 and 5/8th inches from your PAP.
One placement may take the ball from a low RG position, the other to a high RG position both using the same amount of flare from the core, or spin time. One sooner on the lane and the other one flares later down the lane. But both, very little.
If you have noticed I have not mentioned "revs." This is an action imparted by the bowler. Revs will increase as the bowling ball slows down and hooks into the pins. Based on core dynamics one bowling ball may POTENTIALLY flare "more" than another. However that is based on the composite make up of the core an the cover. Determined by the distance of the pin from the bowler's PAP.
Now if you understood all that, please by all means, write to me again. If not, I do recommend you buy my new bowling book. It is a conversational bowling book with all the down to earth language of bowling and bowling adjustments. Thank you for you question Rhyce!
