Slowing down

Question
I am currently throwing my ball too fast. I am throwing around 17.70 to 18.4 MPH. This unfortunately, is counter-acting with the core of my ball causing it to lose it's hook action. I am wondering if there are any type of adjustments I can do, that will allow me to slow my ball speed down and let the ball do the work it's suppose to do?

Answer
Joe,
Ball speed is a great asset in the modern game. I'd suggest that with more surface and a layout to optimize your delivery you can harness the energy of your current game. Rather than giving up the ball speed, seek a coach that can help you use it effectively.

The dilemma when you throw hard, you may not make or have the time to turn the ball sufficiently. Your axis tilt and rotation may not facilitate the reaction needed on the lanes/lane conditions you bowl on.

When I'm hired by a speed dominant player, trying to just effect the ball speed is not the only option. Strengthening your rev rate, tilt and rotation can better utilize something that comes natural. As you try to change an element of your style that is repeatable and natural, it will throw off your entire game.

Without knowing a lot more about what you do now, it would be unlikely I could solve your problem with a couple tips on slowing down. Evaluating the ball, surface, grip, and your style could give some clues to what can be improved to help you manage the ball speed asset.

All that being said, grip and ball weight often contribute to uncontrollable speed. Controlling your first step and keeping the ball low in your set up could help. Thanks for the question. Please let me know what you do.
