Trouble with Ball Hook? Is It Time for a New Bowling Ball?

Question
QUESTION: I am currently getting more upset with myself each time we bowl.  I currently have a 12.4 lb gyro...urethane? ball.  I throw pretty much 12mph each time.  I am having issues with my strikes.  I need 1/2 inch more hook at the end for it too carry properly.  If I move my feet or change my mark it just does not work out for me.  I just need a tiny bit more hook.  I am thinking a new ball will be key.  I am being told my DH that I need a resin ball and this will help with my natural hook.  Is this true?  Anything in particular to be looking for?
Thanks so much for any insight

ANSWER: Leann,
Have your local pro shop guy smooth your ball a little. The Gyro has a fairly rough cover (real rough if it's the particle version). A little less energy loss early and you should get the little bit more ball reaction you are looking for. Give this a try and let me know how it works out at revbowl@revbowl.com. Thanks for the question. Good luck and good bowling.

QUESTION: At first, I thought my cover is very smooth...but it is a matte finish smooth and not a shinny smoothe.  Is that what you mean by rough...a matte finish instead of a shinny finish?
Thanks again

Answer
Leann,
yes, A matte finish ball uses more energy through the lane than a shiny or smooth one. My suggestion to smooth would be followed by a suggestion to shine if making the ball smoother isn't enough. No need for a player with 12 MPH ball speed to throw a matte finish ball. No matter how much oil there is, your speed (or lack of) allows the ball to do what it needs where it needs to. Give it a try.
