Answer
Dear Dustin,

I know just how you feel, both starting a family and going back to school are major obligations. There are 24-hours in a day and that is just not enough time for one major commitment let alone two. Starting a family is a life time responsibility that takes up all your free time and then more. And you still have to go to work everyday.

Attending a college it is pretty much the same thing except you are adding a second job. Studying for test, writing papers, and even the period spend in the classroom is time taken away from other important aspects of your life.

And what makes the situation worst, most university professors are out of touch with the real world. They work 3-4 hours a day and then have their graduate assistant complete all their paper work. And when the professor does not feel like working he shows a film, has a classroom discussion, or takes the day off. Try doing that with your job and see just how long it takes before you are handed a pick slip. And if you are ever late turning in a class paper the professor will lecture YOU on the topic of responsibility. Do not take me wrong, I am not against going back to school to get a degree, college, or college professors. I am just trying to prepare you for what is coming.

My advice to you is to sit down with your wife and kids to discus what your plans are. And I mean discus. Everybody has to have their say in the matter. You will need to explain to your family that some aspects of your life will have to be placed on hold until you are done with school. Going to the movies, restaurants, or even a walk in the park can take away valuable study time. And you may also explain that it is not going to be forever it is only until you acquire your degree. Once you are finished you will be able to obtain a better job and have more time to spend with your family. However, you will need their support.

Do not get discouraged, people return to school and complete their degrees all the time. It is not easy but it can be done. I am one of them. I had to put my personal life on hold for a few years but it was well worth it. I wish you all the luck in the world. And if there is anything else, I can do to help, please let me know.
Yours truly, Louis
