new hire @ high school

Question
I have not been hired yet...My football knowledge is average at best.  I was the quarterback once upon a time for this school, and they still run the same offense.  I want to be the quarterbacks coach in the worst way.  I want to teach these kids all the stuff I wish I would have known.  I was great because of my speed and athleticism...I didn't think I needed anything else.  In hind sight, breaking down tape and studying reads might have taken me over the top.  I haven't coached in year's, how do I let the head coach know what I want to do, when I don't even know if I can do it?????????

Answer
Ask the coach if he has positions on his staff, and be up front and honest about wanting to be his QB coach.  One great aspect of coaching is that we like to share ideas.  You have plenty of time between now and August to learn a great deal about QB play.  You can go to clinics, meet with local college and high school coaches, go to spring practices, get great information from the web, that will make you more knowledgeable about coaching the QB position.

Finally, I am also a believer that if you want something then go get it.
