double-wing offense

Question
Coach Louis,
I am nearing the end of my senior year in high school and the recruiting phone calls have been coming less and less often, so I found a small assistant coaching job under one of my former coaches who left my school for another job my sophmore year.  The school I will be coaching at runs a 4-4 defense, which I have a decent understanding of, but on offense they run a double-wing.  They were considering changing it after a 2-7 season and lack of size on the team.  Unfortunately, it sounds like they will be sticking to their offense and will just try to pass out of it more.  I personally don't like the double-wing offense at all, but I don't call the shots, so I'm going to have to learn more about it if I want to be a decent coach.  Do you know of any books that will be of any help?  I have already read up on a lot of the techniques and fundamentals of the game, but my knowledge on strategy and scheming is still fairly inferior, in my opinion.  You seem to know your football literature fairly well.  Could you help me out??  Thank you for any help you could possibly give me.

Answer
Dear Ryan,
The Double Wing Offense, is nothing more than the old Single Wing Offense with a new twist. All the old plays from the Single Wing are still there, but with a new formation.

When I first started coaching football, I ran the Wing -T formation. The Wing -T, is a single wing with a split-T backfield. It worked very well.

The weakness of the single wing is, that most coaches know that the single wing offense is a 80-90% run offense. So the defense will stack the strong side (the side the wing man lines up on) to take away the power running game. This is why a lot of teams stopped running the Single Wing Offense. A few years later the Double Wing Offense is born.

The Double Wing Offense has all the advantages of the Single Wing. It keeps the defense from keying the wing man and stacking the defense to that side. The defense is force to keep a balance front.

One of the best books on the market today (that cover the topic of the double wing) is;

"The Toss" by Jerry Vallotton.

This book has everything you will need to run a powerhouse double wing team.

Your friend, Coach Louis.
